Backlighting Existing Photo Prints

If you have a light table, you can use it to produce some interesting effects on existing printed images. The idea is to place your image on the table and photograph the image again - with the back light from the table. The photo print paper I use is thin enough to let some light through. I have used a texture print below the main print for a different look. Also, you can use multiple prints below the main print to block off a particular area on the main print for highlighting. You can come up with some interesting effects using this method.

Red River Paper 45lb Zeppelin SemiGloss Double Sided Inkjet Paper Review

The 45lb Zeppelin SemiGloss Double Side paper from Red River is a beautiful paper. The paper has a smooth luxurious feel. It prints very well on my Canon MG6200. I have just received this paper and I think I am going to love it for making photobooks. The paper is rather thin, but I see no bleeding from images on either side to the other. I have used only the 8.5x11 size.The paper is not super white. A very nice paper and highly recommended.

It took me awhile to get the exposures correct. You have to reverse your thinking, because it is a positive - not negative. Fun to play with.

Review of Ultrafine VC ELITE Glossy Variable Contrast RC Paper

I have recently created a darkroom in our laundry room for the purpose of making prints and possibly developing B&W film. The first photo paper I bought was Ultrafine VC ELITE Glossy Variable Contrast RC Paper from UltrafineOnline.com.

I purchase 8x10 sheets. I have developed images from film negatives, inkjet and laser negatives, and paper negatives. 

Pro:

1) Smooth surface - feels good to touch
2) Inexpensive
3) Dries quickly, takes squeegee well
4) Works well with Dektol and Caffenol developers
5) Thin enough to be used as paper negative
6) Robust

I don't have any cons - but keep in mind I am just beginning to learn how to print images. However - I love this paper.

I have recently reviewed Moab Entrada double sided inkjet paper. I was considering buying some more - until I saw the price. I decided to try another less costly brand for making photobooks. The photobooks I'm making are really just practice books, so I don't need the more expensive Moab paper. I selected Inkpress Duomatte 80 paper. The paper is 215gsm and 12 mil thick. It is very white and smooth. It takes the inks from my HP D5460 printer very well. Printed images have good color,contrast, and brightness. 

One of my concerns was how well this paper would do when printed in heavy color on both sides. When printing in heavy color, the paper does curl a bit. But it seems to flatten as it dries. Printing on the 2nd side in heavy color behaved much the same way, curled when wet, flattened as it dries. When all the prints are made and dry, I bunch them together, lay flat, and put some weight on them. They work fine in my photobooks.

The paper has a wonderful feel and the bright white color is beautiful. I recommend this paper for projects requiring single or double sided prints. 

Moab entrada rag natural 190

Moab entrada rag natural 190 is a 100% cotton rag paper 190 gsm weight. I recently purchased and used some of this paper in a 5"x7" double sided weight. I made a 15 page book of some of my sepia prints. I print with a HP D5460  Photosmart print. I had to manually switch the paper to print on both sides. The paper stood up well to the handling by me and the printer. The images are perfect. The paper has a nice feel. I didn't have any problems with paper feeding with my printer. This paper sells for over $12 for 25 sheets but for this project, I wanted a good paper. I am really pleased with the results.

Review of Walgreens Premium Photo Paper Glossy 4 x 6 in.

I purchased some of the Walgreen's Premium Photo Paper in the 4 x 6" save to save a couple of bucks over the better known brands like Kodak and Epson. I printed some photos on my HP Photosmart D5460. When the print comes out, it does seem to curl a bit, but after drying it laid flat. The weight (thickness) of the paper in very thin. It feels cheap and fragile in your hand. For a photo album the print will probably be OK. For handing to several people to view, it may not stand-up to the task. The rendering of the print was very good. The thinness of the paper is the only negative I found.
