My first 4x5 ortho film developed!

It's not much to look at. It's messy, blurred, and underexposed (I tweaked the image below). But it is the first film developed by me. Sure, there are probly kids in kindergarden who can do better but you've got to start somewhere. Taken inside, f5.6, exposure for 2min 30secs. Developed in Dektol.

Film was from UltrafineOnline.com.

Film Simulation Mode on Fujifilm F505

The F505 offers 5 film simulation modes. To save and import photos in these modes the camera must be set to save images as Raw+JPEG. If the camera is in the RAW only mode, your images will be previewed as the film simulation type in the camera, but will be normal RAW images when transferred to the computer.

You can always convert a RAW image to sepia in most image processing programs like Lightroom and Photoshop. I found shooting and previewing images in the "Sepia" film simulation mode helped me with my composition. I suggest the same would be true for the B&W mode.

Some photography books...

Below are a few of the photography/photoshop books I would recommend:
  1. Creative Digital Monochrome Effects by Joe Farace - Includes sections on in camera black&white, post production b&w, and all sorts of interesting effects. Includes lots of how-to and links.
  2. The Creative Digital Darkroom by Katrin Eismann and Sean Duggan - Shows you how to create many of the effects you see in photographs today. Written for photoshop and lightroom users. Lots of information and details.
  3. Magic Lantern Guides - Olympus Evolt E510 by David Schloss - More in depth than the Oly manual. I got the DVD as well. I put page tabs in mine and refer to it as needed.
  4. The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman - gives you instruction on how to develop the ability to compose good photographs. Filled with examples, showing the scene, and explaining how the best shot was accomplished. A worthy read.
